060527 e-Mail from the Road

moving east through the west
Hey everybody:
We chose to go east from Yorkton and headed for Dauphin.
Beautiful warm day with tailwinds for most of it took us as far as a lovely little town called Grande View. We camped in a well kept municipal park and I guess we were a bit of a curiosity as we had quite a few people come passed and check us out during the evening.
The land between Yorkton and Grande View is great. Slightly rolling and more treed than the prairies have been to date. We swept down into the little valley that held Lake of the Prairies and I almost rear-ended an old man in a minivan who was driving down the hill slower than I was coasting. I had to hit the breaks pretty hard.
Rain and winds greeted us when we awoke in Grande View and the morning ride to Dauphin was pretty miserable. I wasn't feeling very energetic anyway. We peeled off our cloths in a laundromat and tossed them in a dryer while we went next door to an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet.
A belly full of food, dry clothes and a couple of hours rest does wonders for the spirit.
Another couple of hours got us to Moon Lake in Riding Mountain National Park, a lovely camping spot in the woods and the drizzle held off long enough for us to build a fire and dry our clothes again. An early stop and hot chocolate & Gran Marnier lifted the spirits nicely as did the close encounter with a moose and her 2 new calves as they walked within 40 feet of us a couple of times. (Looking directly at them spooks them.)
We've just left the park and will soon be descending back down to the plains and the road to Winnipeg. We're probably still 3 days away from the city but the side trip was worth it. I recommend Riding Mountain to anyone who happens to have a spare day in Manitoba.
Bye for now. I'll write again from The 'Peg; sooner if I get a
chance.
Love, hugs and central heating to all.
Brent
