Cycle Canada, Day 26, May 30/06

May 30/06, Tuesday                                                             Day 26                       2447 Km's
Westhawk Campground, Whiteshell P.P. Manitoba                                              169 Km's                                   ~ 7:15 Hrs
What a super day of riding. Winds at our backs for most of it. This is what I thought of when I thought of cycling across the prairies. Too bad it came on our last day before hitting Ontario. I'd hoped for 2 or 3 'big gainer' type days along the way. Sometimes the winds were blowing hard enough for it, just in the wrong direction. When I think about it, except about 2/3's of the day through Dauphin, the winds have been pretty cooperative since Saskatoon. This is just the first time we've taken full advantage.
We had packs of blow-flies following us for about 3 hours while we were down on the flat lands. It was weird. Sometimes there could have been 60 just following us along. They dropped off as we climbed into the park.
The park is the beginning of The Shield. The bones of Canada poke through the soil here. It was also neat to see bits of old road winding off into the woods. I think this might be the old T.H.C. through the park and the abandon bits are older still. The existing road is in pretty poor shape and wouldn't be a lot of fun to drive on but for Doug and I it was like having our own private road into our own private park. Most people come by the new T.H.C. rather than by the Rennie road.
We saw some rock climbers along the way.
